THE HISTORY

In 1988, music industry entrepreneurs, Diana Kelly and Claude Lelievre envisioned a country music festival of unprecedented distinction in western Canada. At that time, country music's popularity in Canada had not yet achieved the legendary proportions it had in the United States. However, Diana and Claude had closely monitored the evolution of country music, and accurately predicted its meteoric rise among Canadian fans.

In 1989, guided by their convictions and enthusiasm - and contrary to the general opinions of music industry associates - the promoters successfully overcame all obstacles to organize the first country music festival to be held in British Columbia, at Hedley. Proving their predictions correct, country music enthusiasts ensured the festival's success in subsequent years.

In 1992, with attendance at 40,000 and growing, Diana and Claude confronted a new challenge: to relocate the festival. Dry climate being a prime consideration, they set out to investigate all available options located in the magnificent countryside of British Columbia's interior region. Finally, an exhaustive search rewarded them with the perfect location: the Ewalt Ranch in Merritt, British Columbia.

The beauty of the surrounding clay cliffs, and the softy rolling landscape that hinted of distant coastal mountains, offered more than just the perfect scenery and atmosphere for the annual event. Boasting an average rainfall of only twelve inches per year, Merritt guaranteed the perfect climate for the ultimate celebration. The flowing Cold Water River wound it's way through 275 acres of flat, semi-desert expanse that allowed for future expansion of the festival…and much more.

After three years of organizing successful events, the ranch revealed to Diana and Claude the true development potential of this spectacular property. Envisioning even greater things to follow, the entrepreneurs entered into months of negotiation with the ranch's owner. Effective April 26, 1996, the promoters successfully negotiated a Purchase Agreement to ensure a permanent home for the Mountain Music Festival…now the finest country music celebration in Canada.
